Mastodon is a gateway
I’ve been thinking about this for the last couple of days: I see Mastodon as a sort of gateway, rather than the final destination.
All this ActivityPub and federation stuff is pretty exciting because you can conceivably interact with mates from anywhere. I guess WebMentions etc allow you to also do that, but I never personally got along with it in its current form.
Just having my own instance of Mastodon again has made me feel like I’ve got proper ownership of my stuff, but even better would be this website itself being my little home on the Fediverse. It’s actually made me excited about fiddling around with tech stuff again for the first time in a very long time.
I’ve been very guilty of putting all my eggs in the Twitter basket over the last couple of years, especially, and all of that has been destroyed by one bellend billionaire. I’m determined not to make that mistake again and even more determined to make my little home on the internet—this website—as lovely and sustainable as I can make it.
👋 Hello, I’m Andy and this is my little home on the web.
I’m the founder of Set Studio, a creative agency that specialises in building stunning websites that work for everyone and Piccalilli, a publication that will level you up as a front-end developer.
